Swettenham to Support Luke Currie in NJT T20 Match

Swettenham Stud is proud to announce that they will be supporting Luke Currie in this year’s City Jeep National Jockey’s Trust T20 Cricket Match, which will be held at Caulfield Park, on Tuesday the 20th of January 2015.
The event raised over $15,000 in 2013, and over $41,000 was raised in 2014.
After careful consideration, Luke Currie was chosen by the Swettenham selectors as the Jockey that they have elected to support, given his ability as a handy all rounder.
A medium pace left arm bowler, Currie can at times bamboozle right hand batsmen with his inability to generate bounce, an attribute not often associated with medium pace bowlers.
What swung Currie in the favour of the Swettenham selectors though, was his quick fire 17 (including 3 x 4’s) in last year’s event easily despatching a very ordinary bowling line-up, and firmly cementing his place in future T20 events.
In the 2014 event, Currie came to the crease at 1 wicket down without score, after John Salanitri knocked over Max Allen on the very first ball of the day.
From there Currie swatted away the loosely phrased “Racing All Stars” bowlers, with aggressive onside batting and sharp running between the wickets.
Currie’s demise came as he unselfishly persisted with fast scoring, holding out to a slower delivery and being caught at square leg by TVN’s Jason Richardson. He arrived at the crease at 1 for 0, and departed less than 20 balls later with the score at a respectable 2 for 30.
Swettenham Stud General Manager of Sales and Marketing Chris Belli commented, “We had quite a selection of players to choose from for this event, but with careful consideration of Luke’s background, we are more than comfortable in our decision to support him.
“Taking into account his upbringing in Tasmania where the norm is Cricket in summer and Aussie Rules in winter, and doing our background on Luke himself, we firmly believe that all eyes be on Luke as he once again dominates with the bat. Not many are aware that he can more than handle himself in the other sport of kings – boxing. These all-round sportsmanlike qualities bode well for success on the cricket field.
Utilizing all of the resources available to Swettenham Stud in the breeding industry, Tim Jones - Assistant Manager at Swettenham Stud, also assessed Luke’s Tesio Scores, Equinome Speed Genetics, Group 1 Gold Mine Results and Cardiovascular Heart Scores. Should he fail to fire on the cricket field, the future looks bright for Currie as a stallion prospect.
What is most intriguing is that Currie may have further developed his skills with the bat after a six month riding contract in Mauritius, a country not necessarily steeped in cricket history, but nonetheless looking for ICC membership in the near future. One wonders whether this could be the beginning of a NJT T20 career across two countries, similar to the World Series Cricket career of Keplar Wessels, who famously represented both Australia and South Africa at International level.
The National Jockeys Trust goal is to relieve this financial hardship and provide these families of fallen and injured jockeys, with the support, kindness and recognition that they deserve.
