Kiwi colt autumn material for Master Of Design

Auckland-based trainer Steven Cole is looking forward to the autumn carnivals with the Master Of Design colt he bought at the NZB Ready to Run Sale.

Cole paid $110,000 for the Diamond Lodge graduate at Karaka a fortnight ago. The colt had been pin-hooked out of this year’s Inglis Classic yearling sale for $55,000 and had breezed 11.09s with a Foxwedge youngster at Te Rapa last month.

“He’s a lovely, athletic colt with a strong head and looked a good mover at the trials,” Cole said. “I will bring him back into work in the New Year.

“I saw him at Diamond Lodge a week before the Sale when Jeremy Whale paraded his two year-olds,” Cole said. “I liked him straight away but I wasn’t the only one. There was hot competition at Karaka.”

The Kiwi colt is a first-crop son of Swettenham Stud sire Master Of Design and was bred in Victoria by Rodney Rae. His dam Beauriphul Gal (Bureaucracy) is an unraced sister to Flemington stakes winner Noircir.

Cole prepares his team at the Byerley Park complex and kick-started his career with Avondale winner Belial (Domesday) in May. He’s a third generation trainer - his father David is a partner in global transport company IRT and was originally based at Pukekohe as was his grand-father Alf.

“I went to Marcus Oldham College in Australia and then came home and worked for Stephen McKee and Nigel Tiley,” he said. “I’m keen to build the numbers and hopefully the Master Of Design colt will help me get established.”

Master Of Design is a Group 1 winning son of Redoute’s Choice and his first starter Kinetic Design was runner-up in the LR Maribyrnong Trial at Flemington last month. He stands at Swettenham for a $15,000 service fee.
