In 2013, leading Victorian nursery Swettenham Stud took a bold decision to add Melbourne Cup hero Americain (USA) to their stallion roster and three years on the globe-trotting Group I winner with the movie star looks is the most represented first season sire at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

A supremely talented stayer by one of the world’s best sires in Dynaformer, Americain was warmly greeted by Victorian breeders covering 155 mares in his debut season. Impressive first foals have grown into eye-catching yearlings and with 26 of his best youngsters accepted into Victoria’s flagship yearling sale it’s obvious what the auction house thinks of Americain.

Now it’s time for the buyers to judge!

Daisy Hill Breeding and Investments will present a draft of nine Americain yearlings offered across Premier I, the Blue Riband and Session II. All of them are from mares hand-picked for Americain by bloodstock agent Rob Roulston, who purchased him originally to come to Australia as a Melbourne Cup prospect.

Daisy Hill will open the sale with Lot 1, a stylish bay/brown colt from Fair Choice, a winning daughter of Redoute’s Choice from the family of $1.9 million earner and two-time Caulfield Cup place-getter Grey Song.

They have a trio of his youngsters in the Blue Riband Session with Lot 115, an obvious pedigree standout being a near black colt from Paris Tryst, an unraced half-sister to Group II winners Outback Joe and Ustinov from Australian Horse of the Year, Let’s Elope.

Another head turner for Daisy Hill will be Lot 208, a chestnut colt from unraced Miss Shamrock, a half-sister by Zabeel to juvenile stakes-winner Fighting Sun from Group I winner Irish Darling.

Swettenham Stud will offer six of his yearlings starting with Lot 158, a lovely brown filly from the good metropolitan winning Bianconi (USA) mare Lorna’s Lass.

Lot 419 from Swettenham Stud is a flashy bay filly with four white feet and an impressive pedigree being from unraced Whipping, a half-sister to $4.5 million earner and multiple Group I winner Zipping. For those who like signs and omens, Americain actually won the 2011 MRC Zipping Classic…. It’s hard not to think this filly has Oaks written all over her!

Lot 452 from Swettenham is a chestnut colt from a noted Australian speed family and his first three dams are by champion sires Redoute’s Choice, Sunday Silence and Rory’s Jester. He is the third foal of speedy winner Another Sunday, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to leading sire Not a Single Doubt from the renowned Easy Date family that has produced Group I stars such as Snippets and Forensics.

Swettenham Stud first season sires have led all first season sires at the Inglis Premier Sale the past two seasons, with Equiano first crop yearlings breaking records at the 2014 sale which included the highest priced yearling by a Victorian sire ($420,000) and highest average price by first season sires ($105,000), and Master of Design first crop yearlings leading all categories at the 2015 event including highest priced yearling by a first season sire ($300,000), highest average price for first season sires ($106,000), highest median for first season sires and highest price to service fee ratio of all first season sires.

Swettenham will also take a keen interest in the sale of Lot 112, an Americain colt from Northeast Note offered by Ampulla Lodge.

The strapping bay was pinhooked by Ampulla Lodge from the Swettenham draft at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale last year for $85,000 and is from a half-sister to stakes-winner Berlioz from the Cotehele House (GB) branch of the Eight Carat (GB) family.

Americain aside, Swettenham Stud have an outstanding draft for Premier with highlight youngsters including Lot 380, the half-brother by Pierro to dual Group I winner Trust in a Gust; Lot 448, a full brother to Group II winner Arinosa; Lot 748, a three-quarter brother-in-blood to Trust in a Gust and Lot 624, a full sister to Inglis Premier winner Valliano.
