Al Shaqab's Toronado Heads Roster

World champion shuttlers Toronado (Ire) and Americain (USA) have arrived back at Swettenham Stud.
Toronado leads a Swettenham roster that’s all class with a top and no tail. Owner Adam Sangster has lifted the line-up to another level standing the world-champion miler in association with Al Shaqab Racing.
“We’re honoured Al Shaqab entrusted us to stand him in Australia,” Sangster said. “His first northern foals from the English National Stud are outstanding and his first foal conceived here last year is a stand-out.
“Toronado is a superb physical specimen and he’s the fastest son of High Chaparral who is emerging as a major influence,” Sangster added. “There’s upwards of 150 mares getting ready to foal from his first book and we kept his fee at $22,000 (inc gst).”
His first Australian-bred foal is a filly from Testa Rossa mare Riverina Red. It’s also the dam’s first foal after a short career that included a 2yo placing at Flemington.
Americain is off to a perfect start at stud in North America this year. His first runner Folk Magic was as green as grass on debut but still had three lengths to spare at Woodbine last month.
His first foal of the season – a filly from Al Maher mare National – arrived on August 3. Her dam descends from G1 Australian Oaks winner Just Now.
Puissance de Lune also has two new arrivals on the farm. “He’s the only Australian Group winner by Shamardal at stud here in Australia and he was beaten a short-head twice in Group 1 races at Flemington,” Sangster added. “We never saw the best of Puissance De Lune. He could have been a superstar but injured a tendon in the Cox Plate.”
Swettenham’s Group 1 winner Trust In A Gust will build his book when parading for breeders at the stud’s open day starting at 10am on Sunday, August 28. “He’s been very popular and we’re excited ahead of his first parade,” Sangster continued. “I just know we’re going to be busy once breeders see him in the flesh.”
Master Of Design broke through with his first 3yo winner when Deal Master cruised home at Pakenham last Friday. He’s only had 12 starters to date and among them are Flemington stakes performers Kinetic Design & Creativity.
Kinetic Design will race first-up in the G3 Quizette Stakes at Caulfield this Saturday as the springboard for campaign heading towards the G1 Thousand Guineas.
Master Of Design (Redoute’s Choice) was a Group 1 winner of the T J Smith (1200m) at Randwick in a time only bettered by Black Caviar. His second crop averaged $75,000 at the Melbourne Premier yearling sale in March and he is priced at a $15,000 (inc gst) service fee this year.
This Saturday’s Caulfield meeting will also be targeted first-up by VOBIS Gold Ingot Plate winner Valliano. He was bred and sold by Swettenham and Lindsay Park has pencilled him in to resume in the G3 Vain Stakes.
