Australian Sales Debut

The 2015 arrival of Al Shaqab’s champion Toronado at Swettenham Stud as a stallion was a big coup for the stud and Victoria.

And now the progeny of the stallion are set to make their southern hemisphere sales ring debut with four foals catalogued for the Inglis Australian Weanling and Broodmare Sale at Newmarket in April.

The first of Toronado’s northern hemisphere foals were in huge demand late last year selling up to AU$330,000. Breeders who have used Toronado will surely hope this is a sign of things to come in the southern hemisphere market.

Swettenham Stud has three Toronado weanlings in its Inglis draft at the Newmarket sales complex.

General Manager Brian Gorman said the weanlings were a lovely example of Toronado’s first crop, showing substance, quality and correctness.

“There have been many good reports and demand is high for Toronado’s weanlings privately, which is very promising as buyers have been actively seeking them out,” Gorman said

Gorman provides a run-down of the weanlings:

Lot 7 – out of Baize (Commands) “A well grown, very attractive colt that is the spitting image of his sire. A lovely shoulder and great hindquarter will help him develop into a quality yearling.”

Lot 19 – Cape Augusta (Cape Town) “Solid, early looking weanling with similar markings to his sire Toronado. He will grow into a correct, well put together colt.”

Lot 61 – Lacey Underall (Desert Sun) “A quality filly with great bone and powerful hindquarters, she will develop into a lovely yearling.”

Irish bred and British trained, Toronado was one of the leading two-year-olds of his generation when undefeated in three races including the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.

He went on to win the Group 3 Newmarket Craven Stakes on his three-year-old debut followed by the Group 1 Goodwood Sussex Stakes. He repeated the Group 1 success as a four-year-old winning prestigious Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
