Punt Paid Off

Punt Club has added another win to his smart record giving his owners their fourth win from only fifteen starts. It is even more notable considering he has placed in seven of those starts. That’s certainly what racing is all about, enjoying the journey and this large group of owners are enjoying every minute.

Winning his second 955m race of the Moonee Valley night racing season, the 4-year-old son of Equiano stopped the clock at 56.21s. A touch slower than his win on February 3 when he ran 55.63s, but to his credit it wasn’t the easiest of runs and he did everything right to be in front on the line.

Punt Club is certainly paying his way, and is the stable favourite at Princess Park’s head trainer Pat Cannon’s. The trainer can not speak highly enough of the consistent galloper and even with a couple of minor set backs recently, Punt Club is proving to not let anything get in his way.

With a four-way battle in the finish, Punt Club had to cover the extra miles when he jumped awkwardly and went back in the field. Having to come three wide on the corner, the big son of Equiano hit his stride and ran hard all the way to the line. Unfortunately the time of 56.21s won’t get Cannon the $50,000 Inglis voucher but they weren’t too upset based on the cheers and celebrations post race.

This is jockey Damian Lane second win on the reliable galloper in the Princess Park Thoroughbreds silks.

“He’s a ripper, so honest and so tough. It’s really great for Pat Cannon, he’s a great trainer, he works hard and it’s good to be aboard (Punt Club) and reward him with a win.”

“The 955m is such a specialised distance with no room for error, so this win is even better as he actually reefed his head down when we jumped and missed the start by a quarter of a length.”
